PLAY THE BALL WHERE THE MONKEY DROPS IT

1
Success in life is often determined by how a person approaches life situations. A reactive thinker may battle crisis after crisis, but a proactive one seems to have everything figured out beforehand and can better deal with the curve balls which life throws.

India has a lot of colonial stories. One of them, I know is related with Colonials playing the golf game in one of the golf court in Calcutta. While they were playing the game it was not the Indians who disturbed their game, but the Indian monkeys. I mean the real monkeys. The monkey’s chase the golf ball and played with it for a time being. They tried to eradicate the monkeys from the golf court by erecting a fence, throwing bananas on them and relocating them.  Wrong and wrong strategy in the first place.  At the end, they learned a lesson and made a special golf rule to “Play the ball where the monkey drops it”.

Take the life from how it treats you. What you are in the world is not a choice but what you become in life is a matter of choices you make.  Life is full of choices, choose them carefully. Proactive thinking involves foresight. To be proactive means to think in advance, in anticipation of future changes or problems. It means covering your bases to include all possible scenarios. A proactive thinker will have several contingencies in mind. A proactive thinker sees the likelihood of crises before it happens.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines being proactive as “creating or controlling a situation by taking the initiative and anticipating events or problems, rather than just reacting to them after they have occurred. Hence, it is innovative and empowering.

Joseph’s journey from prison to palace was one of the perfect examples of a proactive behavior in the Biblical narrative. Stilling the chatter of your mind, and listening to your inner voice is only possible while you have a proactive thinking. It requires redefine priorities, reduces stress, improves relationships, and becomes a leader in and of your own life.

Edward De Bono, who is the proponent of lateral thinking, says; there is nothing more exciting than thinking of a new idea. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a new idea work. There is nothing more useful then a new idea that helps you meet a goal. 21st Church leadership is lacking proactive leaders. St. Paul talks in Ph: 4:8, Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
